What's the similarity between...
...for-profit sex and for-profit education in India?
They are both illegal.
Well... that might seem a little strong.
There is much for-profit sex in India, and the government even distributes condoms to prostitutes, just that they can't go around legally telling people that they provide sex for-profit.
There is much for-profit education in India, just that the government says that only charitable trusts can run schools. Small schools in poor areas, run by enterprising guys who are trying to solve a problem for their community... they try to make a profit too. Neither the big DPSs nor the Happy Flour School/ hairdresser/ mehndi shop in Sanjay Colony, Delhi, are allowed to legally tell people that they provide education for-profit.
Wouldn't it be a more honest India, if they could both legally say that they were solving someones problem, and making a profit doing it?

I think they should be legally allowed to open a school for profit.
It is wierd that you can run a higher education institue for profit but not a school.
This is one of the reasons why I think we have not seen growth of good schools in rural and semi-urban India. Open the field for the private schools and you will see them spawning all over the country.
I don't think so.. it will just complicate things more than what they presently are.
oops! sorry to comment uninvited, but stumbled upon from somewhere and cudnt help writing..
Hey Canary, Your comment is welcome.
But, I wonder... when you say that things will get more complicated... for whom do you think they will get more complicated? For you personally? Why?
The government benefits by creating an artificially maintained scarcity of education.
When things are scarce, they can make allocations (reservations) and thus feel powerful by controlling people's future. Also it gives them a votebank.
If they allow enough school / colleges for everyone to be educated, there would be no takers for their reservation policy and thus reduced vote bank for them.
Also they would have no power over people's education.
Its sick, but that how it is.
I have something to say....
We should know we are living in so called democracy and a government works for welfare state. So you will find prostitution is illegal but most of the people in city know where it is including Police too.... and even politicians as well. If we will believe in let it be policy then let them make profit but taking care of their own health. Make it a legal one but for God sake don't go in to license raj again.. For schooling there should be no issue either it should be run by private or a charitable trust those who are interested in quotas and lot of donations. cont.....
